Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ – Episode 1
Episode 1 of What If…? Series 1 arrived on Disney+ on August 11th and has already received rave reviews. The episode focuses on what would have happened if Peggy Carter was the one who took the super-soldier serum at the beginning of World War II, and not Steve Rogers.
At the end of Episode 1, it is revealed that these are the stories of the Marvel character, The Watcher. He explains that he observes all that transpires in the universe, but he does not and cannot interfere as he is simply The Watcher.
So, who exactly is he?
Who Is The Watcher In Marvel’s ‘What If…?’
In Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ The Watcher, also known as Uatu, is voiced by Jeffrey Wright. Many fans will recognise Wright from Westworld, The Hunger Games and upcoming titles such as No Time To Die and The Batman.
Now the Film and TV star is lending his voice to the Marvel character, The Watcher. Episode 1 of ‘What If…?’ sees The Watcher as the narrator of the episode until right before the credits roll when the character’s identity is revealed.
As made evident during the final minute of the episode, The Watcher simply observers over the universe, never intervening. In Marvel history, The Watchers are the oldest species to ever exist. Their entire race has committed themselves to observe everything that occurs in the universe to gain knowledge.
Uatu is one of the most well-known Watchers and is known for revealing himself to The Fantastic Four after the superhero group got into a huge battle with the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes on the Moon. Uatu broke the rule of The Watchers and interfered with the ongoing battle, revealing himself to the Red Ghost and Fantastic Four’s The Thing.
He then went on to reveal himself for a second time to The Fantastic Four to warn them of Molecule Man.
As for what role Uatu will play in Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ fans will have to wait and see when Episode 2 arrives on August 18th.
