As many die-hard fans will be aware, all of the previous Matrix movies were directed by both Lana and Lilly Wachowski. But after an 18-year hiatus from the franchise, it appears that only one Wachowski sister has returned to direct The Matrix 4: Resurrections.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski, often referred to as the Wachowski sisters, are best known for writing and directing The Matrix movies.

The duo has been in the industry since the late 90s and quickly found success with the original The Matrix, which premiered back in 1999. But The Matrix isn't all the pair are known for, the sisters have also written and directed V for Vendetta, Speed Racer, and more.

Which Wachowski Sister Is Directing The Matrix 4: Resurrections?

The Matrix 4: Resurrections is set to release this holiday season, December 22nd, 2021. But it appears that only Lana Wachowski will be helming the project as director.

In a recent virtual panel for the Television Critics Association Summer Tour, Lily Wachowski was asked why she would not be directing alongside her sister for the upcoming Matrix sequel. To which the popular director stated that she was "completely exhausted" after her transition and due to just coming from back-to-back shoots of Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending, and the first season of Sense8.

Lily went on to state that she needed time away from the industry after being so busy, so she went to reconnect with herself as an artist. She says that she did that by going back to school and painting.

There's no doubt about it that Lily's absence from the upcoming Matrix sequel will be felt, but after 3 previous movies, there's no concern about Lana taking the reigns for The Matrix 4: Resurrections.

More details on Lily's decision to step away from The Matrix 4: Resurrections can be found on Entertainment Weekly.
