Why Netflix's Cowboy Bebop Trailer Didn't Show Ed?

Here's everything we know about it.

October 27, 2021

After a frustratingly long wait, Netflix finally released the official trailer for Cowboy Bebop. However, anime fans wonder why “Radical Edward” or “Ed” was missing in the trailer. Well, here’s everything we know about it.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop is an upcoming live-action series based on a Japanese anime of the same name. The anime premiered back in 1998, and because it’s a commercial success in Japan, Adult Swim picked up the anime to broadcast it in the United States.

Interestingly, Cowboy Bebop was one of those shows that popularized anime among several new western viewers. So, it’s no wonder that Netflix decided to pick the live-action adaptation.

In the new Netflix trailer, we can see the live-action versions of almost every anime character. That includes Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda), Vicious (Alex Hassell), Ana (Tamara Tunie), and Chalmers (Geoff Stults). However, the fan-favorite “Ed” wasn’t part of the trailer, which is frustrating for anime fans.

Will Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop Show Ed?

Besides the main trailer, Netflix released several posters and teasers for the upcoming series in the past, and shockingly, Ed wasn’t shown in any of them. So, it makes fans wonder if the creators have excluded the child prodigy from the live-action adaptation. Well, you’d be delighted to know Ed will definitely appear in the show even though he wasn’t shown in any of the trailers.

Last month in an interview with Polygon, André Nemec, when asked about “Ed,” said that “People will be … very delighted when they watch the season.” Interestingly, keeping in line with Nemec’s statement, Netflix Geeked also confirmed on Twitter that fans would have to watch the show on November 19th to find out where exactly is “Ed” in the live-action adaptation.

A Season 2 of Cowboy Bebop With Ed?

In Cowboy Bebop, Ed is a non-binary child prodigy for hacking; however, the character was first introduced in the ninth episode of the anime. And considering that Netflix’s adaptation will feature ten episodes, there’s a chance that Ed will make an appearance in the final episode. Also, if that’s the case, it could mean that the creators plan to release a Season 2 of the live-action series, with Ed playing a leading role in the second season.

So, if Netflix is keeping Ed in its arsenal for season 2, it makes sense why the character is kept out from the promotional material as of now.

Anyway, these are all speculations, and we can’t be sure about anything until we watch Cowboy Bebop on Netflix. The good thing is that the show is only a month away, so we’ll get our answers soon.
