Sega has revealed it’s working on a brand new JRPG, to be revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2021 in two weeks. The game’s title was not revealed yet. However, a short trailer introducing the game’s concept was published, you can find it further below.

The trailer is pretty grandiose as it mentions it plans to go back to the origins of true RPG, where players could make an infinite amount of stories using their imagination and pen&paper. It hints that this new game will be heavily story-focused with many choices that matter and shape your adventure.

Sega announces new mobile RPG to be revealed at TGS 2021

Problem is, the trailer reveals this new game is for mobile platforms. Which makes the whole message about going back to the origin of RPG lose its meaning in the eyes of many.

If you look at the comments on the trailer, be it in Japanese or in English, you have several variants of “I was excited at first, then disappointed when the narrator said it’s a smartphone game”.

To be fair, it’s not surprising this is a smartphone game. You need to remember mobile is the biggest market by far for over a decade now in Japan and Asia. Console games have declined. What will make or break this game is whether it can deliver on its ambitious promises or not. Who knows, maybe it actually won’t feature a gacha system.

One thing is sure though is that Sega sure has the Getter Guts for launching a trailer like that. Especially right after a JRPG as good as Tales of Arise was launched, though it’s not without faults either.

Maybe this game will actually be good enough to back up these words. We’ll know more at Tokyo Game Show 2021 starting September 30. The game’s event will be on October 1. You can share your thoughts with me on Twitter @A_iyane07.
