Wii Production to Be Discontinued Soon by Nintendo in Japan

on October 1, 2013 6:22 AM

Nintendo had a damn good ride with the Wii, but all good things must come to an end, and it seems that at least in Japan it’s time to let the horse rest.

On the official Japanese page of the console the following wording has been added:

The translation is simple: “production scheduled to end soon.” Even the file name is quite telling: “soon_to_be_discontinued.gif”

The move is not too surprising, as sales in Japan recently dropped to about 1000 units a week, so Nintendo must have decided that it was finally time to pull the plug after seven glorious years of service.

At the moment it’s unclear if the end of production (and most likely the following discontinuation of sales) will only affect Japan or will be enacted worldwide, as no similar notice has been added to the overseas Nintendo websites and no press release has been sent on the issue.

We’ll keep you updated if anything else surfaces.
