What's worse than loosing your progress on a game because you lost power? Loosing your progress on a game because Nintendo wanted to save electricity. It seems that the Wii-U will shut itself off after ninety minutes of being left alone. You might wonder, what's so bad about that, but think of all the times you've left a PC or console running while doing something else. The real problem here is that the Wii-U doesn't save progress before shutting down, it just does it.

Now, maybe integrating a minor feature with games to make sure they save before shutting down was too much work, but Nintendo still could have given some kind of heads up. If you're worried this might happen to you, the feature can be disabled in the options menu. You can even adjust the time to be shorter if you're feeling green, and lucky. Personally I'm going to be disabling it because there's nothing that annoys me more than a do-over.
