Wargaming is the publisher behind many notable multiplayer games like World of Tanks, World of Warplanes, and Pagan Online; that being said, none of them have supported cross-play thus far. World of Warships: Legends, the console version of 2015's naval warfare MMO World of Warships, will be the first title in Wargaming's library to add the popular feature on November 25.

When the next update for World of Warships: Legends drops, the game will also be getting other notable features and content. This includes new maps, UI improvements, and ranked battles to flesh out the game's competitive scene. Still, cross-play is by far its most significant addition when looking at Wargaming's entire catalog from a broader perspective. "Making sure that our players have the best experience possible is our biggest goal, so I’m excited that both sets of fans will be able to enjoy World of Warships: Legends together. This is just the first step in our cross-play efforts; it’s definitely something we want to build on in the future," explained Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi.

This is a great edition, especially when you consider how much of a hot button issue cross-play has become over the last year. Now that Sony is allowing it more openly, games like World of Warships and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare can implement it without much hassle. World of Warships: Legends' developers also believe that it will reduce matchmaking times, which pairs well with the new ranked mode. That being said, the implementation of cross-play here still has a couple of caveats.

Cross-play only works between the Legends versions of the game, so don't expect to play with PC or iOS and Android users. Wargaming also confirmed that cross-play is limited to matchmaking. This means that players can't directly set-up matches with friends or use voice chat across platforms, at least when the feature rolls out on November 25. This announcement does say that "cross-play is a huge step for Wargaming console titles and they are working on making it fully functional," so, along with Kislyi's comments above, that hopefully means those quality-of-life features will be added at a later date or in the publisher's other titles.

Regardless, the fact that cross-play is becoming more and more prominent is great, especially as we approach the next generation of consoles. While World of Warships: Legends is free-to-play on PS4 and Xbox One, you do get a lot of extra in-game bonuses when you pick up its Firepower Deluxe Edition on Amazon.
