Nintendo has announced today that since its Japanese launch in February of 2011, the Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 19 million units worldwide. These sales have been driven by popular software such as Mario Kart 7, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Super Mario 3D Land. Although the 3DS is still very far behind the Nintendo DS which sold 152 million units in its 7 year lifetime, it has nearly surpassed the Nintendo GameCube, which has so far only sold 21 million units in the 11 years it has been available.
Although the 3DS got off to a rocky start, it recovered nicely after an oddly timed and severe price drop. Think the 3DS will ever top the DS? Does Nintendo have something up their sleeves to keep sales high?
