Rumors over the past few months have indicated that Microsoft was working on two next-generation console models, each of which were supposedly codenamed Anaconda and Lockhart. During E3 2019 though, the way in which Microsoft talked about its next-gen platform, Project Scarlett, made it seem like the company was only working on a single console unit that would ship next year. Heck, last year at E3 2018, Spencer even used the plural word "consoles" to make it sound like multiple versions of next-gen hardware were in the plans.

Now, Xbox's Phil Spencer has seemingly cleared up the company's plans for Scarlett and it sounds like only a single console is now expected to ship. Speaking to Business Insider, Spencer seemed to indicate that he used the word "consoles" last year in reference to the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition and Scarlett, not two models of a next-gen platform.

"Last year we said consoles, and we’ve shipped a console and we’ve now detailed another console. I think that’s plural," Spencer stated. While Spencer is technically correct when it comes to his verbiage, this information goes in the face of everything else that we had heard leading up to E3 2019.

According to Thurrott, the plans to release two consoles under the banner of Project Scarlett was indeed in the works for Microsoft at one point, but those plans have since changed to what we know of today. One reported reason for the change to a single unit is because developers were having difficulty developing next-gen games with multiple consoles of varying power levels in mind. Because of these development problems internally, Microsoft has seemingly opted to dash all plans for a multiple console rollout next year leading to Scarlett only taking the form of a single iteration right now.

If Microsoft's past is any indication with the Xbox One X, then the company will likely release an upgraded model of the Xbox Scarlett a few years into the next generation, but at the starting line, it seems like all potential purchasers will only be able to snag a single box. Obviously, this plan could change at any point within the next year, but it seems like those rumors we've heard of Anaconda and Lockhart can now be dashed.
