XCOM Delayed to 2013. The Shooter, Not the Strategy Game

January 15, 2012

2k Marin, the guys behind the BioShock 2, are currently working on a new XCOM game.  Unlike the former games in the series, this game is set to be a squad based, tactical, first person shooter. That is in a stark contrast to the XCOM games of old, which were hardcore, turn-based strategy games. However, this change did seem to catch people eye at E3 last year. It was originally scheduled for sometime this year, but IGN is now reporting that the series has been delayed to 2013.

Hopefully 2k Marin can take their time and craft an awesome game worthy of its namesake. 2k Marin has stated that they trying to keep a lot of the elements from the strategy game and make them work in their first-person shooter, which seems like a daunting task, so a delay isn’t necessarily a bad thing here. On the other hand, if you really want to get your XCOM on, Firaxis Games, the makes of the spectacular Civilization series of games is hard at work on a more classic turn-based strategy game that also wears the XCOM name, titled XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Firaxis’ XCOM is still set to be released some time this year.
