XCOM Meets Braid in All Walls Must Fall; Launching August 8th

Tech-noir tactics game, All Walls Must Fall, gets Early Access PC, Mac, and Linux release date alongside a new trailer.

Germany-based developer inbetweengames — who is comprised of three ex-YAGER developers that previously worked on Spec Ops: The Line and Dead Island 2 —  has announced that its Tech-Noir tactics game (and former successful Kickstarter title), All Walls Must Fall, is poised to launch on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam Early Access on August 8th.

As mentioned in the title — and as pitched by the developers themselves — All Walls Must Fall is XCOM meets Braid. An isometric action tactics game and tech-noir spy thriller, All Walls Must Fall is set in an alternate history Berlin 2089 where the Cold War never ended. In it you command secrets agents who must prevent nuclear annihilation and bring down the Wall.

More specifically, the game picks up after 150 years of Cold War where both sides have used temporal technology to counter each other’s every move. However, this tango is at an end thanks to a rogue nuclear strike, which has both sides sending agents back in time to found out who did it and how to prevent it before everything turns to ash forever.

Over the course of a journey that jumps and loops through a single night in Berlin, players will unravel the conspiracy keeping the West and East locked in this drawn-out struggle and oppression. Lines between factions soon become blurred, making choices difficult. Which side to play? Who to side with? Who can you trust?

Here’s a rundown of the games’ feature, courtesy of inbetweengames:

  • Isometric action tactics game for download on PC, Mac and Linux

  • Procedurally generated levels and campaign that plays different every time

  • Developed by a team of former AAA professionals using Unreal Engine 4

  • Sci-Fi noir Berlin as a divided city in which the Cold War never ended

  • A parable that reflects on free will, moral ambiguity and the meaning of freedom

  • Mixed 2D/3D art style of a propaganda poster brought to life

  • Mind-bending time manipulation abilities

  • Pausable real-time tactics with actions on the beat of the music

  • Synaesthetic nightclub environments and audio

  • A simulation sandbox featuring crowd simulation and destructible objects

  • A focus on player agency and expression fostering different play styles including combat, hacking and social stealth using specialized secret agent characters

  • An inclusive representation of the people of Berlin including their diverse cultural, sexual and gender identities

All Walls Must Fall has been in development for 1.5 years. The version that will launch via Steam Early Access will cover the first act of a replayable roguelike campaign in East Berlin.

Going forward inbetweengames plans to release regular monthly updates based off player feedback. There’s no word on when to expect a final launch nor how much the game will cost in its Early Access form on August 8th.
