Cult Classic PS2 Game XIII is Getting a Remake This Fall
The stylish cult classic shooter XIII is back on November 13, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and Mac.
Publisher Microids has announced via the PlayStation Blog that they will be teaming up with Play Magic Ltd. to remake XIII. The PS2-era shooter was originally put out in 2003 by Ubisoft and was an early example of the cel-shaded look popularized by The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The announcement comes with a teaser trailer that will remind you of a more stylish James Bond intro sequence. Check it out below:
XIII puts you in the shoes of a talented soldier who is suffering from amnesia. Coincidentally, he also stands accused of killing the President of the United States. When you wake up, the only clue to your identity is a tattoo on your shoulder that says “XIII”. From there, you engage in a solo campaign that tests your shooting as well as your stealth skills.
The cel-shaded graphics make the style of this game feel timeless. XIII looks just like a comic book and they use the comic book-like nature to great effect. If you do something like land a headshot from a long distance, then comic panels will pop up to show you the impact in greater detail.
Microids‘ press release does not mention multiplayer, which was included in the 2003 release. XIII originally supported up to 16-player multiplayer in standard game modes like Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. There were also platform specific modes like The Hunt (PC, PS2, and GameCube) and Sabotage (Xbox and PC). That said, the campaign is the real selling point here, so Microids might not view the multiplayer as very important to the remake.
XIII will be out on November 13, 2019, for Nintendo Switch, Mac, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
