Not all games neatly fall into line with current Mario lore, especially when it comes to Yoshi's Woolly World. The newest Wii U Yoshi title integrates wool and various other crafting objects to create the characters, backgrounds, and objects of the world. But where does it fit into the Mario universe? Clearly in previous games the Mushroom Kingdom isn't designed from kitschy materials.

This was one of the many hard-hitting questions GameInformer had for Yoshi's Woolly World's producer Takashi Tezuka. However, according to Tezuka-san, the background to Yoshi's existence is far more intricate, even outside the realm of Yoshi's Woolly World:

Yoshi's universe, both in the Yoshi series as well as the yarn Yoshi world in Yoshi's Woolly World, is separate from the Mushroom Kingdom. There’s not really a link between.

With this in mind, Yoshi is as much of an outsider to the Mushroom Kingdom as the Brooklyn-born Mario and Luigi. Additionally, the interview covers what fire and ice melons taste like and whether Poochy is Yoshi's pet.
