Over the weekend, video games video essayist Jirard "The Completionist" Khalil shared a video to YouTube cataloging his experience with preserving nearly $23,000 worth of 3DS and Wii U eShop games.

The video, which goes by the rather accurate title of I Bought EVERY Nintendo Wii U & 3DS Game Before The Nintendo eShop Closes, captures what is arguably one of The Completionist's most ambitious projects yet. Whereas previous videos from the creator would recount his adventures in 100% completing video games such as Persona 5, God Of War Ragnarok, and most recently, Octopath Traveler II, the video shared this past weekend showcases The Completionist's complete collection of not one but two consoles' entire library of digital games.

As the video lays out in occasionally hilarious, frequently worrisome, and consistently fascinating detail, The Completionist's undertaking required $23,000 in Nintendo eShop vouchers, numerous frustrating encounters with the eShop's infrastructure, and 328 days of dedicated digital downloading in order to achieve fruition. By the end of the project, Khalil and his crew had downloaded a total of 866 Wii U games and 1,547 3DS games onto the several hard drives and SD cards required for the task, preserving more than 1.4 terabytes of digital 3DS and Wii U software.

With the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops set to close permanently on March 27 of this year, video game preservation formed the driving force behind The Completionist's 100% completion of the digital 3DS and Wii U libraries. "Lost media is very real as far as video games preservation is concerned," explained Khalil. "Since the industry started, we run a daily risk of losing games for ever. That's why this matters."

"I will be donating these consoles and all the storage to the Video Game History Foundation in the very end so that all these games can live on." Founded in 2017, the Video Games History Foundation specializes in the archival, education, and preservation of video games and video games-related media, such as magazines, promotional material, and source codes.

In addition to donating the full body of digital 3DS and Wii U games, Khalil and the team at The Completionist will be hosting charity fundraiser Preserved Play this April to raise money for the Foundation. The event is scheduled to run over the weekend of April 15-16 this year on The Completionist's Twitch channel.
