Nihon Falcom has revealed the ninth mainline entry in the long-running Ys series, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. The game is expected to launch sometime in 2019 on the PS4. As of right now, no other platforms have been announced. You can check out the first screenshots down below.

Ys IX will take place in a land that's located north of Estoria in the Gria Eldligen region. You'll be placed in "Prison City," and unfold a mystery surrounding "Monstrum," or individuals who hold otherworldly power. Players themselves will also be able to use similar supernatural abilities and manage their own guild in the new city. Additionally, it appears that Adol, the series' longtime protagonist, will be in the game but he's currently missing in action.

On the game's official Japanese site, some text appears next to, what is likely, the protagonist that reads:

It becomes someone who is not me. Have you ever had such a dream?

In that dream I think. Is this yourself or not yourself?

Is the dream a reality, is the reality a dream? The answer I have reached is terribly simple.

"Whichever is okay?"

Which is the truth - not. Both are true.

As with past Ys games, you can expect fast and fluid action RPG combat. Giant bosses will make a return, as well as the free movement in fights that fans of the series have come to enjoy. Additionally, much of the staff from Ys VIII will be returning for Ys IX.

Back when Ys VIII launched in the west, the game faced criticism for many localization issues found throughout it. Those issues have since been patched out. Hopefully, those problems will not occur again the ninth entry.
