Former Sonic Team Head Yuji Naka Comments on Allegedly Leaked Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Design

Like probably everyone else in the world, Yuji Naka isn't very fond of what is possibly Sonic's design in the upcoming movie adaptation.

Unless you ended up secluded somewhere the last 24 hours, you’ve probably seen the allegedly leaked new look of Sonic in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation, which is all over the internet. Well, one of Sonic’s creators, Yuji Naka, saw it as well and commented about it on Twitter. He pretty much had the same reaction as everyone else.

Here’s what he wrote: “Sonic’s design in the upcoming movie adaptation was leaked instead of being officially revealed. I think it’s part of the movie’s marketing strategy and they purposely leaked it, but it triggered a lot of negative reactions, which may also damage Sonic’s image as an IP so it’s not a good thing. Well, it’s also possible these pictures are fakes made by some fans, but I wish they’d at least give him a pair of gloves. It’s really shocking how Sonic’s hands themselves are white.”

In another tweet, he also stated how they could have done a better job when it comes to the proportions of Sonic’s body.

Later on, Yuji Naka retweeted this redesign by freelance illustrator LadyGT_DA, which is indeed much better.

Meanwhile, the official twitter for the Sonic movie has been silent ever since it jokingly answered criticism when Sonic’s design was partially revealed. The movie was also roasted at the 2019 Golden Globes.

Yuji Naka is a veteran game developer acknowledged by his peers. While everyone knows him as the charismatic former head of Sonic Team and as one of Sonic’s creators, Yuji Naka also greatly contributed to Sega’s early development in the hardware and programming department. You can read more about Yuji Naka’s exploits at Sega in an interview of Studio M2’s developers on Sega Ages Phantasy Star for Switch.

Yuji Naka left Sega in 2006 to create his own studio Prope, and he later joined Square Enix in January 2018.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is scheduled to release on November 8, 2019. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the live-action adaptation will star Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik/Eggman, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, and C. Turner as Crazy Carl.
